Just recently I took a trip down to the SFMOMA to view the marvelous exhibit of Dieter Rams and his work with Braun. With his amazing ideals and ethos displayed on the walls in bold words and physically showcased with his Braun product designs on clean displays the experience was inspiring and remarkable. I have found myself steering more towards the idea of minimalism in my recent years as a designer and definitely see myself exploring more of it’s principles in the near future and beyond. A wealth of knowledge was gained after my visit to see Mr. Rams’ timeless work with Braun but much more is to be learned of this ideal. I am working on a post to discuss my observations and to show them photographically. Stay tuned.

I am often intrigued by design shown in its simplest, pure form. Typography is no exception. Explorations in Typography: Mastering the Art of Fine Typesetting by Carolina de Bartolo with Erik Spiekermann is a recently published book set to inspire and instruct designers in typesetting. The book is a visual collection of examples that allows designers to learn by looking and is casebound with ultra-thin bookboard, complete with yellow edges. This is indeed a coffee table book any designer should consider.
Explorations in Typography is published by 101 Editions and is available for purchase on explorationsintypography.com, an interactive website that allows users to explore setting type. Options in the toolbox include changing size, leading, alignment, and switching between mock or real text.
Got a call earlier from my friend Ian and guess what he was playing in the background? New Radiohead! Completely caught me by surprise. Thank you Jakub for posting the music on ISO50. I’ve been in a design slump lately and this is definitely going to get the creative juices flooding my brain. The video featured above for ‘Lotus Flower’ is one of the singles for the new album The King of Limbs. I didn’t know what to think of it the fist 10 seconds but after watching it all of the way through I couldn’t get enough of it. Thom Yorke you can dance like a maniac all day! We will be posting a review of the new album within the next few days so pay a visit.
In the meanwhile, get over there and buy the new album The King of Limbs.
So after being introduced to Toro Y Moi‘s first album Causers of This and being obsessed over it they have another album being released just around the corner: Underneath the Pine. The album as a whole has a different feel compared to their epic first album but after listening to it the whole way through I am finding myself in loop. It still creates a strong atmosphere of nostalgic lo-fi inherent in Causers of This. Here are some of my favorite track from Underneath the Pine set to be released March 22 on Carpark:

I’m currently reconstructing the title sequence for the George Lucas film THX 1138 using Adobe CS3 Flash. This what I have completed so far and I will most likely be making variations to the background and type textures. To view full screen just click on the Vimeo logo on the video. Let me know what you think…Your comments are much appreciated.
Radiohead is causing quite the commotion. As if releasing the new song “Harry Patch” or stating they may never release another LP wasn’t enough to keep kids up at night, another new song has now been leaked from an unknown source tentatively titled “These Are My Twisted Words”. Two or three guitars play dissonant half step patterns and arpeggiated chords of every color to create a sprawling polyrhythmic progression which sustains for nearly three minutes without vocals. You can’t fully appreciate the subtle details of this introduction without a good and focused ear as it’s easy to slip passively into their reverberated world of echo, delay, and washed out synth. Something tells me, though, that the song may have been prematurely leaked as it ends abruptly without much thought (unless, of couse, that was the thought). Even so, “Twisted Words” is worth a listen as is “Harry Patch”. Enjoy.
